Projects & Activities

It all started with the construction of Europe’s first artificial reef in 1975. Concomittantly we founded the Helping Hand Trust in 1994 as a tool for dolphin research and protection - since then we have significantly enhanced our range of activities. We are experienced in conservation and specialise in Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for developers of marinas and golf courses. The Helping Hand Trust functions as marine related counsellors for the Gibraltar Government and assists marine scholars from all over the globe. Following the instructions of our vet Rosina Traverso we are dedicated to assisting animals in distress. Of course we also conduct our own research via monitoring the species in the Strait of Gibraltar by boat and diving expeditions - many of which have featured in international conferences and the media.

Additionally, we support our sister charity, the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society (GONHS), in its projects. We contribute to its nature related publications and issue updates on possible dangers to the local wild life. The founder of the Helping Hand Trust, Dr Eric Shaw, is also the Head of the Marine Section of GONHS. Via this position he became involved with the terrestrial wildlife and is contracted via the Gibraltar Government to take care of the free-ranging monkeys in the Nature Reserve on the Rock of Gibraltar.
